What EV Charging Really Costs

Most EV cost confusion comes from mixing home rates with public fast-charger prices. Weight each by share of energy, add maintenance savings, and compare per mile.

EV Charging

Most EV cost confusion comes from mixing home rates with public fast-charger prices. Weight each by share of energy, add maintenance savings, and compare per mile.

Blend the two charging prices

Home charging bills at your residential rate; public fast charging often costs two to three times more. The blended rate is the only honest input.

Compare per mile, not per month

Divide monthly charging cost by monthly miles. Compare against gasoline cost per mile from pump price and MPG.

Count maintenance savings

EVs skip oil changes and use brakes less. A modest monthly maintenance saving belongs in the comparison.

Formulas

Blended charging rate

blended = home share x home rate + public share x public rate

Shares are fractions of energy, not of charging sessions.

Worked example

1,000-mile month

Inputs: 30 kWh/100mi; 80% home at 17 cents; 20% public at 45 cents.

Calculation: Blended rate is 22.6 cents; monthly charging is $67.80 against about $116.67 of gasoline at 30 MPG and $3.50 per gallon.

Frequently asked questions

Is public charging ever cheaper than gas?

Usually yes per mile, but heavy fast-charger reliance plus demand fees can erase the gap. Keep home share high.

Should I install Level 2 at home?

If most miles charge at home, Level 2 hardware usually pays back through cheaper overnight energy and time-of-use rates.
