Calculation logicFrequently asked questions
How is my electric bill calculated?
Energy charge equals metered kWh times your rate, plus the fixed customer fee. Tiered plans split usage across two rates at the allowance threshold.
What is a tiered rate?
The first block of kWh bills at the base rate and usage above the allowance bills at a higher Tier 2 rate. Set both rates equal to model a flat plan.
What fixed fees appear on the bill?
A monthly customer or meter charge, typically $5 to $15, applies even with zero usage. Enter it exactly as printed.
How accurate is this estimate?
Within a few dollars when inputs match the tariff sheet. Verify against one past bill before using it to compare plans.
What electricity rate should I enter?
Use your all-in cents per kWh from the supply plus delivery lines of a recent bill. The US average is near 17 cents per kWh; California is above 30 and Texas near 13.
Why does my estimate differ from the bill?
Bills add fixed customer charges, taxes, and tier or time-of-use adjustments on top of the energy rate. Match those inputs and one past bill within a few dollars before trusting the estimate.
